Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A 19th century Spanish Colonial Mexican tin retablo depicting Saint Joseph tenderly holding the Christ Child. Joseph, clad in a green mantle with a red tunic, gazes lovingly toward the young Jesus, who sits at the forefront with one hand raised in blessing. The saint holds a blossoming staff, a traditional attribute symbolizing his purity and divine selection as guardian of Mary and Jesus. The Christ Child, dressed in a vivid red garment, turns toward his earthly father with a look of trust, embodying the central Christian themes of care, humility, and divine love. Rendered with the warm palette and direct devotional style typical of Mexican retablos, this painting was created as a household altar piece, bringing sacred presence into the daily lives of the faithful. Framed for preservation, this intimate image is both a work of folk devotion and an enduring testament to the spiritual life of 19th century Mexico. Size of painting: 7.5" W x 9.5" H (19 cm x 24.1 cm); of frame: 12.25" W x 14.25" H (31.1 cm x 36.2 cm)
