Description:

Oceania, Micronesia, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful handheld fan, made of woven palm leaves with thin bands of dyed thread interwoven into the motif in red and dark and light brown. The weave is incredibly tight and wonderfully preserved, especially on the handle, which is a thin cylinder that extends from one side of the leaf-shaped fan. The exterior edge of the fan is ringed with a two dense bands of cream-colored feathers that are incredibly soft to the touch. A fan like this one was part of the traditional dress of Micronesian people who, regardless of gender, wore woven skirts and belts, jewelry, combs, flowers, and carried woven fans. Size: 10.75" W x 15.85" H (27.3 cm x 40.3 cm); 17.4" H (44.2 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Beautifully preserved with only a few small areas - notably at the base of the handle - where the weave is slightly loose. The feathers are also in lovely condition with just a few out of place or missing. An old handwritten label is stitched onto one side as shown in the photographs; this reads "Anei 6/=".
