Description:

North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a large and exceptional blue and white pottery Fassi bowl, hand painted with geometric and stylized motifs that are influenced by Islamic art and Chinese porcelain! The bowl rests on a ring foot, and the thick walls swell gently outward, the exterior is covered in a white slip ground and the interior basin and rim are painted with a cobalt blue - the central tondo contains a hexagonal shape with radiating linear and circular patterns flowing symmetrically outward in spiraling and abstract floral motifs. The ring base is pierced for suspension to display on a wall when not in use. The blue and white pottery that developed in the mid to late 19th century became known as Fassi ware, which translates to "from Fez." These bold patterns are influenced by the cultural blend of Islamic tradition and Berber tribal symbols and the use of cobalt was inspired by the Chinese porcelain that was becoming more widely available at the time. Size: 14.5" Diameter x 3.75" H (36.8 cm x 9.5 cm)
