North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. An elegant pottery bowl of sizeable form with curved walls that rise to a broad, flared rim, all sitting upon a ring-shaped base. Adorned in blue on white decoration, the interior of the elegant dish is skillfully hand-painted with a complex decorative program of a 6-pointed star surrounding a hexagon with a flower, all embellished by intricate lattice, geometric, linear, and vegetal motifs. A ring of diagonal striations decorates the rim, while the exterior is enveloped in a lustrous beige-colored glaze. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. Note the modern metal wire and fiber rope that are tied to the foot of this example, allowing it to be easily suspended for show. Size: 15.8" Diameter x 4.6" H (40.1 cm x 11.7 cm)
