Description:

North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. This is a beautiful wheel thrown ceramic bowl with an ornate and colorful Berber and Islamic style pattern in vibrant teal, cobalt, saffron yellow, maroon, and black. The wide rim contains a foliage vine pattern, and the shallow basin is slipped in an ivory white then painted with a balance of geometric and foliate inspired patterns. The center contains a rounded trefoil-esque or trillium flower - a popular shape found in Islamic architecture - with 3 spheres that contain scrolling foliate forms. The bowl rests on a ring base that is pieced for suspension when not in use as a serving vessel, doubling as both functional bowl and decorative art. Size: 14" Diameter x 3.5" H (35.6 cm x 8.9 cm)
