North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a large and beautiful wheel thrown ceramic serving dish with a broad, shallow basin hand painted in colorful motifs. The bowl rests on a ring base that is pierced for suspension to display when not in use. The thick exterior walls are unadorned and swell out to a broad rim painted with a teal blue band and abstract dark brown flourishes. The interior basin contains a 6-pointed rosette and petaloid shape that contains additional stylized foliate and scrolling patterns in saffron yellow, blue, and black. Fez or Fassi style pottery in known for the colorful abstract motifs that are a rich cultural blend of Islamic, Berber, and Spanish culture. Size: 15.25" Diameter x 3.5" H (38.7 cm x 8.9 cm)
