Description:

North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A fabulous earthenware bowl known as a mokhfia, with lovely hand painted polychrome patterns. The bowl rests on a ring foot and the walls swell outward to from a shallow basin and flared rim. Adorned in hues of lemon, teal, and cobalt atop a white glaze ground, the interior of the dish is skillfully painted with the central tondo of a floral motif surrounded by decorative squares, all filled with lattice, polka dot, and ovoid designs. A linear pattern additionally embellishes the wide rim, while the exterior is enveloped in a glaze of creamy white. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. Note how a fiber rope is tied to the foot of this example for suspension.
