Description:

North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. This is a lovely wheel thrown ceramic dish that has a ring form base and a broad shallow basin hand-painted with a beautiful geometric and foliate motif. The ring base is pierced for suspension and traditionally these serving vessels were suspended on walls when not in use, doubling as both bowl and art. The rim is painted with a thick teal blue band and abstract dark brown-black flourishes. The interior contains a pentagon / star shape surrounded by 5 circles, containing additional arabesque and foliate motifs in dark green, saffron yellow, pink, and cobalt blue. The Fez region is renowned for their Fassi pottery that is a rich cultural blend of Islamic, Spanish, and tribal Berber patterns. Size: 13.375" Diameter x 3.5" H (34 cm x 8.9 cm)
