Description:

North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A stunning pottery serving bowl known as a mokhfia presenting slanted walls that flare outwards and then rise to a broad circular rim, all sitting upon a tall, pedestal foot. Adorned in hues of cobalt, emerald, lemon, and black on a white glaze ground, the elegant dish displays a gorgeous floral motif on its interior, comprised of petaloid, lattice, linear, polka dot, and starburst motifs. The exterior of the rim is additionally embellished by a thick band of parallel, diagonal striations. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. Size: 11.3" Diameter x 5.6" H (28.7 cm x 14.2 cm)

  • Condition: Repaired from several pieces with many old repairs with metal wires, adhesive, and old break lines visible. Losses to areas of rim. Expected nicks and abrasions throughout, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with impressive remaining pigments.
