Native American, present day central and southern Arizona, Pima, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A finely woven basket from the Pima peoples (also Akimel O'odham, Akimel O'otham, River People). Pima baskets like this example are traditionally made from Bear grass, willow, and Devil's Claw. The maze-like design of this basket refers to the Man in the Maze legend. According to legend, at the center of the maze are an individual's goals and dreams, and when one reaches the center, one is met by the Sun God who passes one to the next World. Size: 17.9" W x 6.75" H (45.5 cm x 17.1 cm)
