Description:

Central Asia, Nepal, ca. 19th century CE. A fine mold-formed terracotta mask of a substantial size bearing the intimidating guise of Bhairava (also known as Mahakala Bhairava or Kala Bhairava in Hindu), a wrathful form of the Hindu god Shiva who protects his devotees from their enemies. The mask shows the deity with flames spouting from his mouth and eye brows, an urna centered on his forehead, and a crown of skulls featuring a stylized human head in the middle. The mask features ample deposits of "puja" (red camwood powder) indicative of extensive ritual usage. Size: 10.625" W x 13" H (27 cm x 33 cm).
