Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, Canada, Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) peoples, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved stone maul with a tapered handle, a discoid upper knob with an integral conical finial, and a bulbous pounding head. Mauls like this example are used for pounding and hammering during food preparation and woodworking. The difficulty in shaping these tools comes from the hardness of the stone as mauls were intended to be used countless times without breaking. Size: 3.5" W x 6.375" H (8.9 cm x 16.2 cm); 7.875" H (20 cm) on included custom stand.
