Oceania, Cook Islands, ca. late 19th century CE. A tokere or slit drum with two beaters created by Cook Islands instrument makers. It was carved from tamanu wood that was hollowed out and varnished. The ends are slightly hollowed. The drum was to be played while sitting in an open trestle frame. Size: 6"H x 25"W. Provenance: Provenance: Ex-private collection of Charles S. Stephenson, the Rear Admiral of Samoa in the 1930s; ex-Museum of Musical Instruments, Phoenix, AZ.
