Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, East Sepik Province, Ramu River region, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A hefty shield hand-carved from a large wood plank with rounded corners and a woven rattan bamboo handle. A triangular wedge panel is carved in relief on the frontside of the shield with ovoid and circular motifs. The verso has an incised line that creates a narrow border encircling half of the shield. Two perforations hold the knotted rattan handle in place. Shields such as this fine example were used in combat and proudly displayed on the wall of the warrior's home when not in use. Size: 21.125" W x 52.125" H (53.7 cm x 132.4 cm)

  • Condition: Fraying of rattan handle. Discoloration and horizontal stain on the frontside. Stable fissure to base. Surface abrasions and chips to peripheries as expected with age and use. Nice patina!
