Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Siassi Island, Huon Gulf, ca. 19th century CE. A collection of seven fish hooks made in the distinctive Papuan style. Each features a long bone - probably a bird rib - carefully smoothed at each end and incised with deep grooves. Added to this is a piece of abalone shell, used to form the hook itself, which has a serrated outer edge. The hook is attached via two holes drilled in its wider end; woven twine wraps through these holes and around the incised lines on the rib bone, holding the hook tightly to the rib. Some have elegant geometric motifs incised on their longer parts. Size of largest (all are similar in size): 1.55" W x 7.25" H (3.9 cm x 18.4 cm); all come displayed in a glass-fronted shadow box which is: 1" L x 12.25" W x 8.25" H (2.5 cm x 31.1 cm x 21 cm)
