Description:

Polynesia, Tokelau Island (territory of New Zealand), ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful wood container called a tuluma, used to carry fishing gear, with an ovoid body, flat base, and fitted lid. Sennit fiber - from the coconut tree - is braided into a thin but strong strap that wraps through two lugged handles on the sides and a raised nub on the center of the lid. The Tokelau islands are a trio of atolls north of American Samoa that have been inhabited for 1000 years, during which time they have developed a rich artistic tradition. That skill is even displayed in utilitarian items like this example! Size: 11" W x 6.5" H (27.9 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hurst collection, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA; ex-private New Zealand collection
