Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A finely carved nephrite jade huang pendant of semi-circular arc form, its pale celadon-green stone accented with russet inclusions. Both sides are intricately incised with curling scrollwork and stylized cloud motifs, the designs executed in shallow relief to emphasize symmetry and balance. The edges are subtly notched with flowing projections, while the center is pierced with a small aperture, likely for suspension as part of a necklace or ceremonial attire. The huang was a traditional jade form dating back to the Neolithic period, often worn as part of elaborate ritual or courtly jewelry sets. During the Qing dynasty, these pendants became prized not only for their elegant carving but also for their symbolic resonance. Jade itself was considered the most precious of materials in Chinese culture, embodying purity, virtue, and immortality. The swirling motifs of this example evoke the eternal movement of clouds and energy, reinforcing its role as a protective and auspicious ornament. Size: 3.7" W x 1.9" H (9.4 cm x 4.8 cm)

Polished to a soft luster, this pendant demonstrates the Qing lapidary's mastery in transforming nephrite into objects of both refinement and spiritual power. Such works would have been valued as tokens of status, belief, and timeless beauty.
