Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely brass relief plaque of rectangular form depicting the Mother of God of Kazan. The Virgin holds the Christ child in her left hand and directs the attention of worshippers with her gaze as he makes a blessing gesture. The holy pair is surrounded by a decorative border of 18 tondos of God and the saints amongst floral motifs. Liberal remains of a Cyrillic inscription frame the entire group. Size (plaque): 4.8" W x 5.6" H (12.2 cm x 14.2 cm); (modern frame): 13.1" W x 15.1" H (33.3 cm x 38.4 cm)
