Description:

**Originally Listed At $800**

Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A hand carved and polychromed wooden Cristo (Crucified Christ) that captures the drama and sorrow of this tragedy with a truly graphic depiction. The anatomy is skillfully delineated with elongated limbs and a severely emaciated torso and limbs as well as stigmata (the marks indicative of Christ's Crucifixion wounds). Aside for the loincloth, Christ is depicted nude, with as much of his suffering body visible as is possible. Christ's visage with those downturned glass inlaid eyes heightens the emotional impact of the piece. Clearly the artisan of this Cristo, while a folk artist, was influenced by theatrical Spanish Baroque depictions of Christ Crucified. Size: 14.125" W x 27.25" H (35.9 cm x 69.2 cm)
