Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An interesting wood, straw, leather, and canvas statue of a rider and his horse, probably a depiction of Santiago Matamoros, also known as Saint James the Greater or Santiago the Moor Slayer. The rider's arms are outstretched and likely once held a sword or other attribute, and his cloak is a stiffened canvas, heavily painted with once bright colors and golden pigments. The horse has leather reigns, a real horsehair tail, and a straw hat has been added to the rider. Santiago Matamoros was one of Christ's disciples who is believed to have founded the Christian church in Spain, and this figure is based on a prototype found in European paintings of Santiago Matamoros - triumphant upon a white horse - although this horse has aged into a brown- beige! Size: 13" L x 11" W x 20" H (33 cm x 27.9 cm x 50.8 cm)

Santiago Matamoros is usually shown dressed in lavish vestments, oftentimes depicted wielding an intimidating sword and trampling over many severed heads of Moors. Similar iconography also constitutes the central section of a 7 panel altarpiece in the Chapel of the Alcazar of Segovia. In addition, a myth of the Middle Ages describes how years after his death, Santiago Matamoros miraculously resurfaced in the battle of Clavijo in 844. During this battle he assisted the Christian King Ramiro I of Asturias in his victory over the Moors who ruled Spain between 711 and 1492.
