South America, Bolivia or Peru., ca. 1800 - 1899 CE. Large and exceptional silver (about 95% pure) votive / santo crown in the Spanish Colonial ecclesiastical tradition — made to adorn the head of a church altar figure of the Virgin Mary or a major saint. The form is classic: a flared repoussé band base, arched ribbed supports rising to an orb-and-cross finial, all worked with scrolling acanthus and foliate Baroque ornament. The scale is notable — at 2.6 lbs, this is a substantial piece. Exhibiting rich repoussé and chased decoration throughout. The openwork form is composed of four arched panels, each densely embellished with scrolling foliate motifs, masks, and baroque-inspired ornament. The crown is surmounted by a domed element and cross finial, consistent with ecclesiastical use - possibly as a processional crown or devotional ornament associated with religious statuary. Size: 8.75" W x 13.75" H (22.2 cm x 34.9 cm); silver quality: 95%; total weight:
The lower band is finely detailed with high-relief decorative elements, reflecting the strong Spanish Colonial influence present in Andean silverwork of the period. The craftsmanship and exuberant design are characteristic of 19th-century religious metalwork from the region . A visually striking and authentic example of South American ecclesiastical silver, well-suited for collectors of colonial art and religious artifacts.
