North America and Central America, Guatemala or Mexico, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. mid-19th century CE. A fine wood and glass nicho containing a representation of the Virgin Mary standing atop a brass, floral plinth and wearing a gold-colored cloth robe as long brunette hair cascades down her shoulders. The Holy Mother is contained within a green-painted rectangular box with 2 doors that open to a viewing glass and are secured closed by a brass latch, all supported by 4 legs. A brass crown and radiating halo on the back wall further adorn the sacred figure, while paper tissue flowers surround her. Size (w/ doors closed): 7.2" W x 15" H (18.3 cm x 38.1 cm); (w/ doors open): 14" W x 15" H (35.6 cm x 38.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010

  • Condition: Hinges of doors slightly loose and legs a little uneven causing some unsteadiness. Some nicks to exterior, as well as old inactive insect holes. Otherwise, intact and very nice with great pigments. Light patina throughout.
