Latin America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand carved wooden santo figure of St. Michael the Archangel standing atop a flat platform, donning regal garments with a canvas robe draped over his shoulders. A nail in his back indicates where his wings may have been, the arm is raised, and probably once held a sword aloft, archangels are understood to be helpers and allies who offer dedicated protection through life's trials and travails. Santos played an important role in bringing the Catholic Church to the New World with the Spanish colonists. These religious figures were hand-carved and often furnished with crowns, jewels, and other accessories, usually funded by religious devotees, and were used as icons to explain the major figures.
