Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Rattanakosin Kingdom, ca. 19th century CE. A magnificent Thai gilt-brass sculpture of the Buddha, seated serenely in dhyanasana (meditation posture) upon a rectangular base. His right hand reaches toward the earth in bhumisparsha mudra (earth-touching gesture), recalling the pivotal moment of enlightenment when Siddhartha Gautama summoned the Earth to bear witness to his victory over illusion. His left hand rests gently in his lap, the palm fitted with a circular insert that once supported an attached object - perhaps a parasol, an offering dish, or even a vessel containing the Buddha's elixir of life, a potent emblem of spiritual immortality and renewal. The Buddha's tranquil features - arched brows, downcast eyes, and subtle smile - convey infinite compassion and meditative calm. Rising from the crown of his head is the flaming ushnisha, the sacred flame of spiritual wisdom and enlightenment. Size: 12.3" L x 21.3" W x 32.5" H (31.2 cm x 54.1 cm x 82.6 cm); 34" H (86.4 cm) on included custom stand.

His monastic robe, draped gracefully across one shoulder, is intricately patterned with inlaid mirrors as well as minute floral and geometric motifs, each form executed with the precision and reverence characteristic of Rattanakosin-period artistry.

The lustrous gilt surface, mottled with darkened patina and traces of age, bears witness to centuries of devotion. Such large-scale images once graced temple sanctuaries, where they served as both icons of veneration and embodiments of the Buddha's eternal radiance - his flame a beacon, his lost vessel a reminder of the inexhaustible wellspring of awakening.
