Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States or Canada, Tlingit or Haida, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved cedar dance paddle with incised and painted formline motifs, composed of an elongated petaloid blade which gradually tapers to a point and a short handle. One face features crosshatched and etched ovoid and curvilinear motifs, and the other is painted with similar motifs in red and black. A paddle of this size and decoration may have been used in ceremonial dance, sale, or even made as a beginner piece carved by a young craftsman. Size: 21.25" L x 4" W (54 cm x 10.2 cm)
