Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States, Alaska, Wrangell, Tlingit, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A stunning and large hammered copper potlatch ladle inlaid with gold motifs and incised with formline animals. Ceremonial ladles were often embellished with totem crest / clan patterns and made from precious materials such as copper and gold, and used during potlatches and other important feasts to convey wealth and status. The whirling log (swastika) symbol has roots in Native American culture, long before the 20th century, and used by many tribes as a symbol of luck or the rotation of the sun but largely fell out of use after its association with the Nazi Party in the 1930s. Size of ladle: 21.125" L x 4" W (53.7 cm x 10.2 cm); case: 26.5" L x 8.25" W (67.3 cm x 21 cm); gold quality: 71.9% to 72.3% (equivalent to 17K+)
