Description:

**Originally Listed At $250**

Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Tohono O'odham (Papago), ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A large plainware pottery storage jar or olla vessel with a flattened, stable base and slightly outturned rim. The vessel was formed by coiling and scraping to achieve a somewhat smooth surface, then fired, with distinct dark firing cloud patterns across the plain surface. The Tohono O'odham, from the Sonoran Desert in southern Arizona and northern Mexico, are more famous for their baskets than their pottery. Large pottery vessels such as this were used for utilitarian storage or cooking, with the pottery typically being functional rather than ornamental. As a result, their pottery tends to be more roughly formed - this example features a dimpled, textured surface and a slightly asymmetrical shape. Size: 8.5" Diameter x 10" H (21.6 cm x 25.4 cm)
