Description:

Oceania, Melanesia, Trobriand Islands, Massim peoples, ca. 19th century CE. An attractive, hand-carved wooden bowl of a dark-brown hue with a round but stable base, expanding walls, a flat rim adorned with an incised zigzag-adorned stripe, and a deep basin. One side of the exterior boasts a raised handle with a pair of circular bulbs on either end of a curved body, and the other end bears a raised circular boss. Bowls like this were used in feast settings and typically held large quantities of various foodstuffs. A fine patina envelops this wonderful example from the Massim! Size: 13.9" W x 4.125" H (35.3 cm x 10.5 cm).
