Description:

Oceania, Melanesia, Trobriand Islands, Massim peoples, ca. 19th century CE. A finely-preserved bowl of a wide form, hand-carved from dense wood of an espresso-brown hue. The hemispherical vessel has a round but stable base, a shallow basin, and a flat rim adorned with incised zigzag motifs. The exterior of the bowl boasts a pair of raised diamonds filled with dense linear motifs, and a petite suspension hole is situated near the outer-most edge of the rim. Fabulous patina envelops this wonderful example from the Massim! Size: 11.9" W x 3" H (30.2 cm x 7.6 cm).
