North American, United States, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An antique brass snare drum with wood rings painted with orange, white, and black stripes. The hide beater head is worn but the snare wires underneath are intact and made from tight linen fibers. The snare or side drum was invaluable in infantry armies of Europe and North America to signal troops and give orders. This drum is drilled through the wood rims for suspension while marching. Size: 14.5" Diameter x 9" H (36.8 cm x 22.9 cm)
