Description:

Latin America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial, ca. 1800 to 1900 CE. An oil on tin retablo depicting La Vendimia Mistica (the Mystique Vintage), the composition comprised of the Crucifixion of Christ with lambs catching blood in their mouths in the lower portion. Gloria Giffords has identified the biblical source for the mystic vine theme as Isaiah 63.3. The visual source may be traced to 12th century European illustrated books and Italian paintings of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. One possible source for Mexican retablos depicting this subject may be Hieronymous Wierz (1553-1619) as books containing his depictions were imported to Mexico. A strong example. Size: 14" x 10" (35.6 x 25.4 cm).
