A beautiful Roman intaglio of Methe, the spirit and personification of drunkenness, hand-carved from banded agate and set in a Neoclassical gold ring to be wearable. Partially nude, the youthful goddess stumbles left while holding a phiale or wine bowl to her lips, about to take a sip. Drapery cascades from her shoulders, surrounding her slender figure. A popular subject for intaglios, Methe is the companion of Dionysos, and is often shown as she is here, part-naked and about to drink from a drinking bowl.
