Description:

**Originally Listed At $2000**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast-bronze chariot attachment, likely an axle cap, formed with a pair of enormous rod-form spikes emanating from each side of the socketing shaft. A pair of petite spikes protrude from the midsection of the shaft, and on top is a discoid cap with grooved peripheries; this portion would have attached to a chariot wheel while the larger spikes faces outwards. The shaft and both of the larger spikes are incised with parallel stripes to create zigzagging bands that catch the eye. Fabulous layers of green patina have formed across the composition over centuries of exposure. Size: 10.625" W x 4" H (27 cm x 10.2 cm); 7.375" H (18.7 cm) on included custom stand.
