Description:

Roman, Eastern Empire, Holy Land, Imperial to early Byzantine period, ca. 1st to 6th century CE. A delightful ensemble of 6 pottery oil lamps, each adorned with various floral, phytomorphic, linear, figural, and grape relief motifs. All present discoid bodies with protruding spouts. Two of the lamps have been pierced at their fill holes - the buyer of the lamp would do this in ancient times to ensure ritual purity. Size of largest (figural lamp, though all are similar in size): 4.3" L x 2.6" W x 1.7" H (10.9 cm x 6.6 cm x 4.3 cm)

  • Condition: Two have ancient breaks at center, while other 4 are intact. All have expected surface wear with nicks, chips, and abrasions, but are otherwise in nice condition with liberal remaining relief decoration and earthen deposits throughout. Lamp with grapes has a stamped maker's mark of a flower on underside of base, and figural lamp has stamp of a singular line on base. Base of floral lamp is signed "EAV?"
