Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A brass phalera or cavalry bridle fitting, cast in a disc form with ornate cutouts and pierced elements for attachment. The central circular panel is flanked above and below by symmetrical lobed extensions, the uppermost featuring paired finials with small perforations - likely used to secure the fitting to leather harness straps or as part of a chamfron (face guard) array. The lower section is similarly pierced, with negative space forming stylized curvilinear motifs. Such fittings were commonly used in Roman cavalry regalia for parade or display, rather than in combat, reflecting the rank and prestige of the horse and rider. Size: 6" L x 3.5" W (15.2 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: private Dayton, Maryland, USA collection; ex-private F. B. collection, Maryland, USA, acquired between 1990 - 2010
