Lot 48
Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A well-worn yet evocative marble fragment of a male nude, likely a representation of Hercules, whose muscular form and heroic nudity remain discernible despite age-related erosion. The figure stands upright, the weight subtly shifted to one leg in a classical contrapposto stance. The anatomical modeling emphasizes a broad chest, defined abdomen, and rounded glutes. The head is weathered and softly contoured, with vestiges of facial features still traceable. Carved in the round from creamy white marble now bearing earthen encrustations, this figure may once have held a club or lionskin in keeping with traditional Heraclean attributes. Though aged, the piece exudes the vigor and idealized form associated with Greco-Roman heroic statuary, and serves as a poignant fragment of Rome's sculptural legacy. Size: 1.3" L x 2.4" W x 4.6" H (3.3 cm x 6.1 cm x 11.7 cm)
Provenance: ex-Jasper collection, Illinois, USA; ex-Dennis Herr collection; ex-Leland Mast collection
