Ancient Near East, Holy Land, ca. 1st millennium BCE; Ancient Greece, Cyprus, ca. 800 BCE. A set of 4 hand-built pottery vessels, 2 originating in Cyprus and 2 originating in the ancient Holy Land. Both Holy Land vessels have a round but stable base, a wide mouth, and an attached handle. The Cypriot vessels have twin handles similar to pilgrim flasks but spherical bodies like drinking vessels. Size of largest (Cypriot vessel): 5" W x 7" H (12.7 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Toluca Lake, California, USA collection, before 2010

  • Condition: Each vessel with small chips, earthen deposits, and light abrasions, otherwise intact and very good. Orange Cypriot vessels has old label that reads "ILE DE CHYPRE / FOUILLES DE M PIERIDES / CH.-L. FROSSARD 1873," most likely Demetrios Pierides (1811 - 1895), founder of the Pierides collection, and archaeologist Charles-Louis Frossard (1827-1902).
