Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, 21st to 31st Dynasty, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. A fine gathering of 2 necklaces strung in attractive ways using beads and pendants formed from colorful faience. The first necklace features dozens of petite seed-form beads adorned in hues of orange, turquoise, and dark purple of an almost black color. The second necklace is strung with dozens of lengthy tube beads as well as a handful of seed and spherical beads. Dangling from the center are 2 lion-foot pendants, 2 pendants with the face of Hathor, and a plaque pendant with a royal uraeus cobra, a wadjet eye, and an ovoid frame that perhaps contains a pharaonic cartouche. Size (pendant necklace): 27.25" L (69.2 cm); (largest pendant): 0.75" W x 1.2" H (1.9 cm x 3 cm); (seed bead necklace): 23.5" L (59.7 cm)

Provenance: private Dallas, Texas, USA collection, via descent, acquired in Greece, Turkey, and Iran from the 1950s to 1970s while stationed as diplomats

  • Condition: Both necklaces are strung in modern times and wearable as shown. Faience beads and pendants are ancient; stringing and metal terminal components are modern. Minor chips, abrasions, encrustations, and fading to coloration of several faience beads, with softening to most finer details on pendants, and some relatively sharp corners. Nice preservation to coloration on most beads.
