Lot 91
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Ica, ca. 10th to 13th century CE; Chimu-Inca, ca. 1460 to 1532 CE. A fine group of three pottery vessels, including a blackware slipper vessel from the Chimu-Inca tradition and two painted jars of Ica manufacture. The Chimu-Inca vessel takes the form of a round-bodied slipper pot, its spout placed off-center and decorated with a modeled lizard whose body arches across the upper surface, with incised markings accentuating its textured form. This reptilian motif is likely symbolic, as lizards were creatures associated with regeneration and water, key themes in the Andean worldview. The pair of Ica jars are redware examples painted in contrasting black and cream slip, each displaying bands of geometric ornament. One jar features a flaring rim with applied lug handles and a repeating diamond-pattern frieze, while the second is a slender-necked jar with strap handle, its body encircled by linear motifs. Size of largest (slipper): 3.5" L x 2.4" W x 2.9" H (8.9 cm x 6.1 cm x 7.4 cm)
Both are characteristic of Ica ceramic style, which flourished on Perus south coast before the rise of Inca hegemony, their decoration testifying to the high level of technical and aesthetic achievement of these coastal workshops. Together, these vessels present a concise survey of Andean ceramic traditions in the centuries before European contact, combining sculptural invention with painted design and linking coastal Perus rich iconographic vocabulary with the broader imperial culture of the Inca.
