Description:

Near East / Central Asia, Persia (Iran), Seljuq to Ilkhanate era, ca. 11th to 13th century CE. A pair of leaded bronze oil lamps, each beautifully etched with geometric and calligraphic motifs. One lamp features a distinctive cow-head spout, while the larger displays medallions containing stylized birds interspersed with registers of script. In Persian tradition, such oil lamps were more than utilitarian - they symbolized divine guidance and protection, embodying a blend of Islamic and folk beliefs. Their light was kindled during sacred household duties, often accompanied by blessings, and they held ceremonial importance in events such as New Year festivities, births, and funerals, serving as both spiritual and protective icons within the home. Size largest: 5" W x 9.5" H (12.7 cm x 24.1 cm)
