Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Chambri Lakes, ca. mid-20th century CE. An attractive set of hand-built pottery vessels made from a coarse red clay and painted with a white-on-grey motif. Each vessel has the same relative form defined by a piriform body with a flared rim atop a wide base. The larger vessel depicts an abstract avian-form head with concentric circle eyes and a projecting beak, and the smaller features a similar design but with additional raised concentric circles and ovals adorning the lower body. Size of largest vessel: 7.55" W x 11.5" H (19.2 cm x 29.2 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: Minute repairs to rim of smaller vessel. Larger vessel repaired from multiple pieces, with losses to lateral corners of beak, and resurfacing along break lines. Both vessels have a few stable hairline fissures, nicks and abrasions to bases, bodies, rims, and bird heads, with fading to original pigmentation, and light encrustations within recessed areas. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
