Native American, United States, Archaic to Woodland period, ca. 1000 BCE to 1000 CE. A fine pair of hand-knapped chert blades from early Native American cultures that may have functioned as scraper or cutting tools. The black chert is a broad bifacial shape with a triangular blade and flat basal edge. The other is a made from a creamy white chert, with a large random flaking pattern and petaloid profile. The knapped blades like these are made using percussion, striking the chert with harder stones; the process required patience and skill to make the correct shape without shattering or breaking off too much chert. Size (black stone): 3.75" L x 2.5" W (9.5 cm x 6.4 cm); (white stone): 3.6" L x 1.75" W (9.1 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
