Description:

Native American, Late Woodland Period, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A deeply compelling lot of two hand-carved stone mask effigies of the Late Woodland period, each worked from a naturally ovoid river cobble into a flattened, ovoid face with the spare, reductive facial vocabulary common to this tradition: sunken almond-shaped eye sockets, a prominent central ridge nose, and a subtly incised or modeled mouth, the larger carved from a dense dark gray-to-black stone and the smaller from a warm buff sandstone, both reverses left in their natural, unpecked state, the contrast between the two stones lending the pair a quiet poetry that amplifies rather than diminishes the gravity of each individual face. Size of larger: 6.3" W x 8.5" H (16.0 cm W x 21.6 cm H)

Provenance: private Colorado, USA Collection; ex-private Denver, Colorado, USA collection; ex-private New York, USA collection, acquired in 2016 and 2019 via private sellers
