Description:

Northern or Western Europe, probably England, Italy, or France, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely ensemble of 2 agate cameos and 1 glass intaglio. The red agate cameo features the head of a satyr facing left, while the green stone displays the bust of a bearded knight facing right. Last, the glass intaglio exhibits a dark hue of forest green and carved with the insignia of 2 crossed anchors surrounded by the motto "ONE IS NOT ENOUGH IN A STORM." This appears to be an English version of an impression with the same inscription in French found in the collection of William Tassie; number 1171 in "A Catalogue of that Part of Mr. William Tassie's Extensive Collection of Impressions from Engraved Gems, Consisting of Devices and Emblems, with Mottos in Various Languages Made in Composition for Seals..." United Kingdom: n.p., 1830. Size of largest (satyr): 0.7" L x 0.6" W (1.8 cm x 1.5 cm)

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
