Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, Neolithic period, ca. 4500 to 500 BCE. A pair of pecked and polished stone adze or axe tools: one made from a beautiful hardstone with warm tan hues and the other is from a dense gray stone. The petite blade has a prominent spine, an acutely angled cutting edge with a slightly indented underside, and a thick butt end; this stone perhaps functioned as a carpenter's tool known as a gouge. The other is a large rectangular adze blade with a thick butt and flared chopping edge. Size (adze blade): 8.5" L x 2.8" W (21.6 cm x 7.1 cm)
