Lot 96
West Mexico, Jalisco, Lake Chapala region, ca. 1000 to 1521 CE; Guanajuato region, Chupicuaro culture, ca. 500 BCE to 200 CE. A pair of Pre-Columbian terracotta figures from ancient Mexico. The larger figure, mold-made in buff clay, stands upright on broad bifurcated feet with an elongated body and a flared headdress incised with relief linear and triangular motifs. Faint remains of "Maya" blue pigment are scattered on the headdress. The verso is labeled "Las Trojes, Jalisco near Lake Chapala," and it likely originates Post-Classic period, with clear influences of Aztec/ Toltec culture. The smaller figure is hand-modeled and depicts a seated woman cradling a child on her back, positioned on a four-legged bench. With stylized features and rounded limbs, it echoes the expressive family-themed effigies associated with the Chupicuaro culture. Size of large flat figure: 7.5" L x 3.3" W (19 cm x 8.4 cm)
Provenance: private Fort Collins, Colorado, USA collection, acquired via inheritance
