West to Central Asia, Islamic / Persian, Iran, ca. mid-20th century CE. This is a charming brass incense burner in the form of a wild feline creature, styled after similar Seljuk forms from the 11th to 12th century. The creature presents a rounded head with perky ears, openwork eyes and mouth, a barrel shaped body with a sinuous tail, straight legs, and slender, horse like legs- perhaps a leopard or caracal with the addition of hoofs rather than paws. The entire body of the animal is hollow with pierced openwork and repousse shapes of geometric and arabesque patterns. The neck/head cast separately from the lower body and hinged at the base of the neck so that it opens and closes, and the head may be lifted to place incense within the body. Under Islamic religious law, actual anthropomorphic and zoomorphic representations were forbidden, but the "principle of improbability" was a concession that allowed renderings of fictitious animals that did not actually exist- hence the hooves on this cat! Size: 11.3" L x 3.3" W x 7.8" H (28.7 cm x 8.4 cm x 19.8 cm)
