West Africa, Mali, Bamana / Malinke peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A minimalist yet elegant hand-carved door lock depicting a stylized anthropomorphic figure in the traditional Bamana style, which includes the horizontal slide bar. The vertical component represents a human figure with a crested headdress or coiffure, bold facial features, and an angular neck. The body is incised with elaborate linear motifs, likely intended to represent tattooing or scarification, and presents a flat chest and protruding navel. Size: 15.5" W x 16.4" H (39.4 cm x 41.7 cm); 18.6" H (47.2 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Professional repair to headdress with break line just barely visible on periphery. Small loss to upper periphery on right side of slide bar. Surface abrasions commensurate with age and use. Stable pressure fissures. Nice signs of age and light patina throughout. Ample remains of incised decoration.
