Western Africa, Ivory Coast, Baule peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A lovely hand-carved wooden scepter with a tapered lower body, a stocky shoulder, and a flared top. The body of the scepter features two registers with alternating abstract human faces and crabs. Above the flared top stands a leaning owl in the center of a petal-ringed dome. Dignitaries would use scepters like this to display their wealth and prestige. Size: 3.8" W x 14.3" H (9.7 cm x 36.3 cm); 17.25" H (43.8 cm) on included custom stand.
