Description:

West Africa, Benin, Fon peoples, ca. mid 20th century CE. A richly-carved, large, commemorative architectural panel, probably from the side of a family shrine. Relief figures stand in a tableau that appears to depict people of all ages in a variety of activities. At its center, depicted in profile, is a small child held between two adult figures; flanking them are two standing figures, one holding a staff, the other what looks like a butter churn. The other ten figures stand or sit facing outward, each with unique clothing, coiffures, and attributes. From above, a crocodile leans down, depicted in low relief as if in the background of the vibrant scene. The Fon are also known for brass tableaux of a similar relief form. Size: 47" W x 18.25" H (119.4 cm x 46.4 cm)

Provenance: private Matrisciano collection, Thousand Oaks, California, USA, collected around 1940
